The Band Wagon (1953) is a classic MGM musical directed by Vincente Minnelli and starring Fred Astaire, Cyd Charisse and Jack Buchanan. Set within the world of Broadway theatre, the film moves between romance, comedy, dance and elaborate theatrical fantasy, culminating in its celebrated Girl Hunt Ballet.
This VetroScope artwork draws on the film's distinctive visual vocabulary, bringing together the sophisticated glamour of Astaire and Charisse, the hard-boiled imagery of The Girl Hunt Ballet and the theatrical fantasy surrounding Buchanan's production of Faust. Rather than recreating a single moment from the film, the composition brings these contrasting elements together in the manner of a classic Hollywood poster.
The vivid colour, oversized typography and carefully arranged figures celebrate the exuberant visual character of The Band Wagon, while the painted and graphic layers transform its mid-century poster language into a contemporary fine art object. The layered composition separates graphic elements from the painted surface, creating a physical sense of depth and a dialogue between painted image, glass, and reflection. This interplay between traditional painting and contemporary materials is central to the distinctive presentation of the VetroScope series.
The vinyl overlay is produced using professional-grade Oracal® 651 sign vinyl, precision cut and reverse applied to clear shadowbox glass to achieve the signature layered effect unique to the VetroScope process.
Each VetroScope original is a unique, one-of-one artwork. The reverse of the canvas is authenticated with the artist’s custom studio stamp and is accompanied by a Certificate of Authenticity.
